There is something magical about looking up at a sky full of stars.

It invites you to pause. To breathe a little deeper. To remember just how small we are in the best possible way.

We wanted to bring a little of that feeling inside.

We wanted the ceiling to disappear.

To create the feeling of stepping into a place where the boundaries between indoors and out begin to soften. A soft glow overhead. A ceiling that seems to dissolve into darkness. Tiny points of light that feel less like fixtures and more like the night sky itself.

The kind of space that quietly draws your eyes upward, where conversation pauses for just a moment as wonder takes over.

Most guests will simply enjoy the atmosphere. But hidden among the stars is a story that belongs to our family. Four constellations, representing the five of us, are woven into the ceiling above.

I began by recreating each birth sign and mapping the constellations that would become part of the sauna ceiling. Using AI as a design tool, I created the star charts and oriented them toward north, giving us a guide for placing each constellation within the larger field of stars.

As the years pass, the materials around them will continue to tell their stories. The aspen will deepen. The copper will darken. The sauna itself will gather the marks of every person who finds rest within it.

But the stars will remain steady.

They are a small reminder that we are part of something much larger than ourselves. That while our lives are shaped by seasons, moments, and change, the natural world holds rhythms that stretch far beyond our own.

These stars are our family's small mark on woodsmoke sauna, a quiet piece of the story that brought this place to life.

Then it was time to bring that sky down to earth.

Before a single light could be installed, Bill carefully selected and cut every board that would become the sauna ceiling. We sorted through stacks of locally milled aspen, searching for boards with the clearest grain, then laid every board across the garage floor exactly as it would appear overhead once installed.

Only then could I begin placing the stars.

Every star had to avoid tongue-and-groove joints, the furring strips hidden above the ceiling, the stove, windows, and door. I carefully marked each constellation star with a pencil and awl before adding another seventy-one stars, placing them one at a time until the sky felt natural.

It took hours.

Even after checking and rechecking everything, one lone star landed directly beneath a furring strip. Thankfully, Bill was able to carefully drill away just enough wood to create a path for the fiber without bending it.

Sometimes craftsmanship looks like careful planning.

Sometimes it looks like quietly solving the last unexpected problem.

Each star was drilled twice. Once for the fiber itself, and again with a countersink bit that carved a tiny hollow into the wood. That small detail became surprisingly important. By adjusting the countersink, we could subtly change the way each point of light glowed, making some stars feel softer and others just a little brighter.

Then came the installation.

Our Cariitti lighting system arrived from Finland with one hundred fiber optic strands in three different lengths and instructions that left plenty to the imagination.

We mounted what quickly became known as "the octopus" above the center of the sauna and carefully fed each strand through the framing, hoping every fiber would reach the star it had been assigned.

One by one, each strand was secured with high-temperature epoxy before the ceiling boards were installed.

Today, the lights are fully dimmable, allowing the atmosphere to shift from a gentle glow to something that feels remarkably close to standing beneath a clear night sky.

And perhaps that's our favorite part.

On a cold winter evening, guests will leave the warmth of the sauna for a cooling round beneath the real stars overhead.

Inside, they're surrounded by a sky we've carefully crafted.

Outside, they're greeted by one no one could ever improve upon.

We hope both bring you a quiet sense of wonder.

Warmly,night sky
